I had a conversation with a gentleman the other day and we were talking about the “coaches” at Duke City CrossFit. After the conversation he asked me, “Why do you call them ‘coaches’ and not ‘trainers’?”

Our reason: we see everybody who workouts with us as an athlete.  Every athlete needs a coach to coach them to success.

What is an athlete?  According to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary, an athlete is “a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sport, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina.”

You see right there in the actual definition, you are training in exercise, sport and this thing called life.  Yes, you are Training for life!

In CrossFit we take it a little bit further than the requirements of strength, agility or stamina. We coach you to a higher standard by training 10 General Physical skills (Cardio, Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance and Accuracy).

You can see that these all play a vital role in being successful in any sport (especially the “sport of fitness”).  What about us? What about the ones in the gym who are training for life?  We are training to keep up with our busy schedule, our kids, our job, or are just tired of being sick and ready to live a healthy lifestyle free of the side effects of medications. We come in daily and work hard to keep up with life and feel good while doing it.  With this work comes all the side effects:  new energy, fitting in those jeans that were in the back of the closet, and don’t forget that amazing new confidence we find!

It doesn't matter what you are training for.  You need somebody to help you, to show you the way. Great sport athletes didn't just come out and become great.  They had a coach to show them how to train, how to be a leader and how to succeed. In the gym it is no different. The coaches want to show you how to move properly, how to get the best out of your training, proper nutrition and how get over mental blocks to succeed both in the gym and outside the gym too.

So, when anyone asks me why we have coaches and not trainers, my answer is easy – because our gym is full of athletes!
